Indian Army gifts retired military dogs to schools and citizens, honouring their service

Retired military working dogs, who have selflessly served the nation with unwavering loyalty, are now finding a new purpose – spreading love, joy, and companionship. These extraordinary canines, with their unique training, calm temperament, and dedication, are being adopted by schools for special children and benevolent citizens across the country, continuing their service in a meaningful way. On the occasion of the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army gifted twelve retired military dogs to Asha Schools and kind-hearted individuals. This thoughtful initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to honoring its brave soldiers – both human and canine – who have dedicated their lives to service. These K-9 heroes have served the nation in various terrains and operations, displaying courage and resilience. Their work in detecting explosives, avalanche rescues, search and rescue missions, tracking, and guarding has been vital to national security and humanitarian efforts. Indigenous breeds like the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalyam are increasingly used by the Indian Army alongside established working dog breeds for these critical roles. The presence of these dogs brings therapeutic benefits, especially to children with special needs, helping them improve social, emotional, and cognitive skills. After their service, these canine warriors are cared for at the Canine Geriatric Centre at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut Cantt, where they enjoy comfortable, well-deserved retirement. The Indian Army also maintains Geriatric Centres for retired equine and canine soldiers, ensuring they receive the same care and honour as retired human soldiers. These centres offer comfort, care, and dedicated veterinary support, reflecting the Army’s commitment to its silent warriors. Through this initiative, the Indian Army sets an inspiring example of respect, compassion, and care for those who serve the nation. It reminds us all of the incredible bond between humans and animals, offering these brave dogs a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.
