Bengaluru: This Valentine's Day, Bengaluru's flower scene is buzzing with change. While roses have long been the classic symbol of love, they're now facing stiff competition from hybrid chrysanthemums, snapdragons , and lilies. In fact, demand for these unique blooms has surged by 30% from last year and nearly tenfold over the past decade. Florists say buyers are ditching traditions for more striking flowers that boast rich hues and intricate shapes. Srikanth Bollapally, president of Flower Council of India, told TOI that over one million red chrysanthemums are sold every day during Valentine's week. A florist, who operates from Wilson Garden area, said: "Ten years ago, roses completely dominated the Valentine's Day market — no other flower even came close. But today, chrysanthemums, snapdragons and lilies are giving roses tough competition." Srikanth added: "People are drawn to these flowers not just for their beauty but also because they make stunning arrangements. Their vibrant colours and elegant look have convinced many that they're perfect for gifting. While roses are still the top choice, the trend is shifting — out of every 10 customers, six buy roses, but four now opt for red chrysanthemums. It's clear that Bengaluru's floral preferences are evolving," he said. But why the shift? he explained, "Buyers are exploring more sophisticated options like hybrid chrysanthemums, snapdragons and lilies. These flowers not only stand out visually, but also carry a unique charm that makes a bouquet feel more personal and special. It's no longer just about tradition but expressing emotions in a way that feels new and meaningful. This shift shows people are open to redefining romance beyond the classic red rose." Aravind T M, director of the South India Floriculture Association, said chrysanthemums have quickly become the second most popular flower after roses, thanks to their longevity. "Chrysanthemums don't wilt as quickly, making them a symbol of love that endures," he said. The price of a single stem during Valentine's week can soar to Rs 30, proving just how much these blooms are taking over the market. A florist from Madiwala told TOI, "This year, a customer walked in and asked, ‘What flower will make my bouquet different?' That's a question I hear more often now. People don't just want roses, they want something that feels personal. Hybrid chrysanthemums, snapdragons, and sunflowers are in demand because they bring a fresh, modern touch to Valentine's bouquets. Five years ago, I stocked only a handful, mostly for weddings. Now, they're a bestseller."
