Prabhakaran, Padmashree awardees Tulasi Munda and Dr Parshuram Khune, and various other political and administrative leaders, underscoring the importance of these initiatives for regional development. In collaboration with Thriveni Earthmovers, Lloyds has achieved another significant milestone by introducing India’s first electric fleet for mining operations. This pioneering initiative aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for green initiatives, promising a remarkable 19 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and an annual decrease of 79,500 tonnes in CO2 emissions. The company’s commitment to excellence is further demonstrated through its newly inaugurated Iron Ore Grinding Unit at Hedri. With an investment of Rs 2,700 crore, this facility boasts an annual processing capacity of 10 million tonnes of iron, marking a significant leap forward in Gadchiroli’s industrial capabilities. The unit is equipped with advanced technology for wet grinding through ball mill systems and features sophisticated concentrate thickening processes, ensuring optimal efficiency in iron ore processing. Eco-friendly mining Lloyds vision extends far beyond industrial development, encompassing a holistic approach to community development. The company has demonstrated exceptional dedication to social responsibility through various initiatives. The establishment of the Lloyds Raj Vidya Niketan School, a CBSE-affiliated institution, currently provides free quality education to 400 students in Hedri, with ambitious plans to expand its capacity to accommodate 10,000 students. This educational initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing the region’s human capital and creating opportunities for future generations. Spotlight Wire In the healthcare sector, the Lloyds Kali Ammal Memorial Hospital has already made a significant impact, serving over 63,000 people. The facility is set to expand from its current 30-bed capacity to a 100-bed multi-specialty hospital, ensuring accessible healthcare for the underprivileged communities in the region. This expansion will bring advanced medical facilities closer to rural communities, addressing a critical need in the area. The company’s commitment to women’s empowerment can be seen through the Lloyds Vanya Garment Centre, where more than 200 women from 32 villages have successfully produced 40,000 garments within just nine months, creating a model for rural economic empowerment. This initiative not only provides employment opportunities but also helps in building confidence and financial independence among rural women. The company’s operations at Surjagarh Mines showcase its innovative approach to green mining. By converting traditional diesel-powered machinery to electric systems, Lloyds has become the first in India to implement such large-scale conversion of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) to greener alternatives. This transformation represents a paradigm shift in the mining industry, demonstrating that resource extraction can be conducted with a strong focus on environmental protection. The recently inaugurated Konsari DRI Plant, representing an investment of Rs 400 crore, has already generated employment for approximately 600 local residents since its commencement in September 2023. This facility, equipped with a 4MW waste heat recovery Power Plant, demonstrates Lloyds commitment to efficient resource utilisation and local employment generation. The plant’s sophisticated technology ensures optimal production while maintaining strict environmental standards. At Surjagarh, the company has also invested in community infrastructure, building family quarters for armed outpost personnel, a gym, and a children’s park. These facilities promote community well-being and create a positive living environment for the local population. The company’s approach to community development goes beyond mere infrastructure creation, focusing on building sustainable and vibrant communities. Sustainable mining practices Lloyds, through its MDO Thriveni Earthmovers, is pioneering sustainable mining practices at the Surjagarh Mines by deploying electric trucks. Inspired by the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Thriveni Earthmovers, a leading MDO, has spearheaded the conversion of fossil fuel-based HEMM machinery to electric power, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly mining operations. Through the green initiative, there has been a remarkable 19% reduction in fuel consumption and an annual decrease of 79,500 tons of CO2 emissions. A sustainable vision Thriveni, in partnership with Lloyds, has ambitious plans to source 50 per cent of its energy requirements through renewable sources, including solar and wind power. This initiative is projected to achieve carbon absorption equivalent to 25 million trees annually over the mine’s lifetime, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. The company’s future projects include the development of a Greenfield 2 x 4 Million tons per annum (MTPA) Pellet Plant with associated facilities at Konsari, Gadchiroli. The construction of a 90-kilometer slurry pipeline from Hedri Grinding plant to Konsari, with a capacity of 10MTPA, is expected to be completed by March 2025. These projects represent a significant technological advancement in the region’s industrial infrastructure. Spotlight Wire Through its comprehensive approach to development, incorporating environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic growth, Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited is not just transforming Gadchiroli but setting new standards for industrial development across India. The company’s initiatives represent a balanced synthesis of technological innovation, environmental stewardship, and community development, promising a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. The success of Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited in balancing industrial growth with environmental conservation and community development serves as a model for other companies in the sector. This approach demonstrates that profitable business operations can go hand in hand with social responsibility and environmental protection, creating a blueprint for sustainable industrial development in emerging regions.
